We may not like them, but we all have weaknesses. In auditions and even classes, many actors (rightfully) focus on their strengths to book work. But, sometimes, it’s important to zero in on our weaknesses. Bringing up the weaker areas of our game may be uncomfortable at first, but eventually breeds confidence and provides the best opportunity to make a breakthrough. Indeed, confronting and developing a weakness can spark an unexpectedly new asset that is a game changer for you in auditions and on set. If only you have the courage to “go there”….
This month, we’ll assign a scene that directly confronts a self-identified or teacher-identified “chink” in your acting armor. Maybe it’s a lack of confidence in your body, voice or sexuality. Maybe it’s a physical bad habit. Maybe it’s a fear of doing comedy. If you’re comfortable playing the straight man in comedy, maybe it’s a fear of playing the outrageous character or vice versa. Some actors maintain an extremely consistent level, but are not comfortable taking risks or are afraid of going “over the top.” Some theatre trained actors are weak at film technical skills. The list goes on. But if you’re honest with us, we’ll find you a scene that triggers your weakness and FORCES you to make progress on it. Then, we’ll perform the scenes for an audience comprised of the entire StoryAtlas studio, including alumni, auditors and guests and every actor will receive an evaluation of their work. The class will be taught by Hunter Lee Hughes, director of the award-winning feature film Guys Reading Poems).
