Science fiction films pose exciting acting challenges and opportunities. The scripts sometimes contain technical language more difficult to make “real” or “human.” Extra exposition is often included to get the audience up-to-date on the world created by the screenwriters that can become deadly boring in the hands of the wrong actor. There is imaginative work, requiring you to see creatures, planets and dangers all while you’re actually looking at a green screen. Sometimes, you’re not even playing a human being, but another species completely, bringing up even more questions from an actor’s point of view!
In this four week cycle, you’ll be assigned a scene from a science fiction script and we’ll develop it over three weeks through rehearsal and exercises intended to give you firm footing in this widely seen genre. The class is taught by Hunter Lee Hughes (director, Guys Reading Poems) the first three weeks. The fourth week, we’ll perform the scenes for an audience comprised of the entire StoryAtlas studio, including alumni, auditors and guests and every actor will receive an evaluation of their work. All three industry guests will provide feedback on your work.
