APRIL: Dark Side Rising.

$220.00 $200.00

Our five-week cycles of acting class are focused and add useful tools to your process as an actor, while culminating with the challenge of performing for the entire StoryAtlas studio. This month, in part three of three of our “Shadow Power” series, we examine how to mine the rejected parts of ourselves, residing in our Shadow, for use in our creative work as actors.

NEW EXPANDED CYCLES! By request, we have extended to five-week cycles instead of four-week cycles!

Most of us walk around completely suppressing or ignoring the existence of our Shadow, our very own dark side made up of the rejected parts of ourselves and our life experiences that we don’t want to taint the picture we’ve painted to the world at large…and to ourselves and our loved ones. We admit that other people have have real emotional turmoil under the surface – crude people in traffic, that loser in our family that can’t make much of himself, “those” people who have political views that are antithetical to our own. But…”I’m in the light, a seeker, an artist. I’m above all this dark side stuff, right?” Wrong.

As human beings, we all have a Shadow. It’s a powerful part of our personality that our conscious mind – by its very nature – seeks to thwart. The world – and our personality – might quickly devolve into chaos if we allowed our Shadow Selves to sit at the throne of our inner life. However, that suppression comes at a price and the Shadow will exert itself one way or another – a sudden outburst, important papers lost, a slip of the tongue at an inopportune moment. The good news is that for creative people, and especially for actors, the Shadow provides an incredible amount of imagery and energy to revitalize our creative work. And this month, we’re going to tap into that Shadow Self and use it…to transform our creative work.

In this five-week cycle, we’ll dive into dark material with our Shadow as a fulcrum to understand the characters at hand. We’ll develop the scenes over three weeks using exercises to explore our dream figures and shadow elements and integrate them into our work. The final week of the cycle will add the challenge of performing for an audience comprised of the entire StoryAtlas studio, including alumni, auditors and guests. The class is taught by Hunter Lee Hughes (director, Guys Reading Poems).
